Unlike other radios, it is not absolutely necessary to get a programming cable for radio use. However to access all of the features, you will need to order this programming cable. For $10 you will be able to spend an ungodly amount of time designing your own code plug and trying it with your radio and then post it for other people to take your hard work and put it into their radio.
This cable is needed to update the firmware of the radio.

This is not a cheaply made cable, the high quality is evident and the gold spring loaded contacts and threaded retention thumb screw mounts the cable to the radio quickly and securely.
Great design with the contact pins, less wear and tear than conventional two pin. Simply plug and play not a single issue.
Excellent quality, works very well, would highly recommend it. Downloaded the software for the radio and simply plugged the cable in and went to work, very impressed.

CS580 /751 programming cable

This cable works out of the box, no special 2007 Prolific drivers needed as the Prolific chip is genuine. Good value!

Don't hesitate to buy this cable
No issues with the cable at all. Windows detected the radio via the cable and automatically installed the driver. Cable is well built, and doesn't feel like a cheap part at all. Oh, and you need it to write the code plug.
